Viruses and bacteria can present a danger to patients’ recovery and the wellbeing of healthcare professionals. Normal cleaning and disinfection may go some way to mitigating the risks, but they inevitably leave behind some residual contamination. Employing a multiple disinfection strategy, by applying UV-C radiation as an additional treatment, can effectively contribute to further mitigating these risks.

    Medical environments

In medical environments, UV-C can be used to disinfect the surfaces (e.g., floors, walls) of empty patient rooms and other sensitive areas such as operation rooms, in both cases after cleaning. Methods include:

    • Open luminaire: radiating directly with no shielding, therefore no people can be present in the room.  Usually 18-75W TUV PL-L and T8 lamps
    • Disinfection unit with UVD robots. Typically using 180-325W TUV XPT amalgam lamps
    • Disinfection cabinet for surfaces of objects. Typically using 4-25W TUV PL-S and TL mini lamps.

For household equipment such as baby bottle sterilizers, dish dryers, etc., UV-C offers extra security after cleaning and helps to maintain a clean surface during storage.

    A word of caution

UV-C lamps present minimum risk when used by professionals who know how to use them. They must shield their eyes and skin to avoid light damage and severe injuries to the eyes and skin. We advise customers to exercise caution when selecting equipment and look for evidence of third party testing as well as certification of device materials and electrical components by well-known organizations such as NSF, UL, CSA, DVGW-OVGW or other international requirements as applicable.

At this moment, none of our UV-C lamps are certified or approved under any applicable laws as a medical device and as such, Signify and/or any of its group companies do not currently intend for them to be used as medical devices anywhere in the world.
